Geneva, 20th November 2014 – 25th Universal Children’s Day. Today, the Convention on the Rights of the Child reaches its 25th year, Terre des Hommes was among the international NGOs that contributed to the establishment and the ratification of the Convention. It has generated substantive progress while at the same time staggering numbers of children are still affected by humanitarian crises, or otherwise victims of violence, exploitation and discrimination. Terre des Hommes considers that renewed efforts are needed by all stakeholders to ensure full respect of children’s rights.

A guiding principle and a working tool

The Convention on the Rights of the Child  has transformed the life of millions of children. The Convention offers a vision of the world where all children develop their full potential without discrimination, and are protected, respected and encouraged to participate in decisions affecting their lives. It is one of the most complete human rights instrument linking civil, political, economic, social and cultural rights. It has the biggest international support of any human rights treaty, having been ratified to date by 194 countries and it has therefore become a near universal reference.

Knowing that the United States is one the holdoust from ratifying the CRC alongside with Somalia and South Sudan, Terre des Hommes has sent a Letter to President Obama to urge him to send the Convention on the Rights of the Child (CRC) to the U.S. Senate for ratification.
